Updates and improvements to Subtitle Managic.

A fresh start screen, easier lists, and RTF saving

v1.0.10 August 6, 2026
  • New: a friendly start screen — big buttons to load a video, load subtitles, auto-transcribe, or start from scratch. You can also simply drop files onto the window; the drop zones light up to catch them.
  • Improved: the Dictionary & Shortcuts lists are easy to fill now — just press Enter and type the next entry. On Windows, adding entries was nearly impossible before, and selected rows were unreadable. The default lists in the Settings are finally saved and pre-fill every new document.
  • New: documents can also be saved as .rtf — same content, but it opens directly in Word & Co. Subtitle Managic still reads all its settings from it.
  • New: “Show in Finder” / “Show in Explorer” in the File menu jumps to the saved file; on the Mac, Cmd-click the window title to see where it lives.

Auto-transcription now times subtitles precisely

  • Improved: auto-transcription places subtitles exactly on the spoken words — each title starts when the voice starts and ends when it stops. No more tiny titles flashing by, and no more titles that appear before the speech does.
  • New: timeline editing — move a group of titles together, copy and paste titles, and trim them more precisely.
  • Improved: Final Cut Pro titles — exports are frame-accurate, and files exported by Subtitle Managic open cleanly again.
  • Fixed: a crash when editing entries in the Dictionary & Shortcuts list, and several dialog texts that were cut off mid-sentence.

Almost any subtitle file now opens

  • New: subtitle files from other programs now open too, even when they are just a list or a table with times and text. Subtitle Managic shows how many subtitles it found and takes them over for you.
  • Improved: extra columns, such as numbering or character counts, are left out automatically — and the times stay exactly as they are.

A dictionary for perfect names, and subtitles that fit every video format

  • New: Dictionary for auto-transcription — enter names and special terms, and they come out spelled exactly like that. The list under the video now has two tabs: Dictionary (for transcription) and Shortcuts (for typing).
  • New: the video format is detected — portrait and square clips (social media) automatically get the right line template, and line length is capped so subtitles never extend past the picture.
  • Improved: subtitle size now looks the same on every format; the Style dialog shows it in real pixels of your clip, and preview, full-screen view and export match exactly.
  • Fixed: exports keep the video’s format — portrait stays portrait, square stays square, including rotated phone clips.
  • Improved: existing project files open unchanged.

Transcribe straight into your subtitle format, and save your own presets

  • New: choose a line-length format right in the transcription window — Cinema, TV, Social or one of your own — so the subtitles come out already formatted for that use, with no need to reformat them afterwards.
  • New: create and edit your own line-length presets. A “Manage…” button (in the transcription window, the Line Length dialog and Settings) opens a manager where you can add, duplicate, rename and delete presets and set the characters/words per line, number of lines, reading speed and gap.
  • New: mark any preset — including your own — as the default for new documents and transcription, so you no longer start on “Custom”.
  • Fixed: the standard-shortcuts list in Settings showed dark text on a dark background and was unreadable; it is now light and legible.
  • Improved: in Settings, the “Manage…” button now sits next to the preset menu and matches the light look of the other buttons there.

Waveform and transcription now work on every installed copy

  • Fixed: on some computers a freshly installed copy could play video but failed to show the audio waveform or run auto-transcription (reporting that the clip had no audio) — the built-in audio engine is now included correctly on macOS, Windows and Linux.
  • Improved (macOS): the app now runs on macOS 11 (Big Sur) and later; it previously required macOS 15.

Easier subtitle creation, older Intel Mac support, and crash fixes

  • New: you can now start subtitling before loading a clip, and add subtitles faster — press the I or O key, click the empty subtitle list (double-click when no clip is loaded), or drag across the timeline. Every new subtitle gets a sensible default length instead of a zero-length one.
  • Improved (macOS): the app now runs on older Intel Macs — editing, the audio waveform and video export work on macOS 10.13 and later (automatic transcription still needs macOS 10.15). If your Mac is too old, the app now explains this clearly at startup instead of failing later.
  • Fixed: several crashes — setting an In or Out point before any subtitle exists, reopening a saved project that had no custom shortcuts, and opening certain Final Cut Pro XML files.
  • Improved: creating a subtitle by dragging on the timeline now also works with broadcast (MXF) and audio-only clips, and the selection rectangle disappears as soon as you release the mouse.
  • Improved: clearer load menus, plus a refreshed subtitle Style dialog and About panel.

Style editor, video export, and line-length re-segmentation

  • New: subtitle style editor — a floating palette with live video preview to style subtitles (colours, box padding and more), with full undo.
  • New: export video with burned-in styled subtitles, plus styled FCPX title export.
  • New: Line Length dialog re-segments subtitles to reading rules — max characters or words per line, max lines, reading speed, minimum duration and gap — with named presets that also guide auto-transcription.
  • Fixed (Windows): “ffmpeg not found” after installing, and Open Media now shows all supported video/audio formats instead of only .mov.
  • Fixed: reopening a .stmngc no longer loses the linked media and settings, and transcription no longer crashes near 99% on certain imports.

Update check, MXF support, and reliability fixes

  • New: Subtitle Managic now checks for updates on launch and can notify you when a new version is available. Check manually via “Check for Updates…”, or turn the automatic check off in Preferences.
  • New: MXF clips can be loaded — audio playback, waveform and auto-transcription work; only the video picture cannot be shown.
  • Fixed: auto-transcription now places subtitles at the clip’s Start Timecode instead of 00:00:00:00.
  • Improved: loading a clip now shows the whole clip in the timeline; zoom in from there.
  • Improved: saving is now crash-safe — an interrupted or failed save can no longer damage the existing document, and cancelling a Save dialog no longer marks unsaved work as saved.
  • Fixed: a registered license now recovers automatically after a long offline period instead of falling back to trial mode.
  • Fixed: exported frame-based timecodes could show an illegal frame number (e.g. :25 at 25 fps); FCPXML marker export no longer fails with no subtitles.
  • Improved: subtitle files in older encodings (e.g. ISO-8859-1) now import with correct accented characters, and styled text inside ITT cues is no longer dropped.
  • Fixed: opening a corrupt or unsupported clip now reports an error instead of loading silently with a broken timeline.
  • Under the hood: security hardening, closing a transcription window now stops its background processing, and various smaller fixes.

Better transcription, multi-track audio fix, waveform reliability

  • Fixed: clips with several audio tracks (typical for broadcast MXF/MOV) transcribed as “[BLANK_AUDIO]” and showed a flat waveform — all tracks are now mixed together instead of picking a single, possibly silent, one.
  • Fixed: waveforms now render reliably in the installed app on every machine, and long clips (1 h+) finish too — with a visible status while generating and a clear error instead of a forever-empty timeline.
  • New: much better transcription quality — the bundled model is upgraded from “small” to “large-v3-turbo” (installer grows ~370 MB; transcription takes roughly twice as long).
  • Improved: voice-activity detection now guides the transcription itself, preventing invented sentences, mid-clip language switches and spontaneous translations on silent passages; stray annotations like [BLANK_AUDIO] or [MUSIC] are filtered out.
  • Improved: transcription warns up front when the clip’s audio is essentially silent, and every run writes a diagnostic log that error messages point to.
  • Changed: Auto-Transcribe now sits at the top of the renamed “Language” menu (formerly “Translations”).
